As you know, tomorrow is our combined, Parent/Youth & Singles, Free Car Wash Outreach event. We are looking forward to the event tomorrow and are anticipating that the Lord will bless our time together.

I believe that this will be a good chance to deepen relationships within the church and just serve people practically with God’s love. Our prayer is that this practical expression of kindness will be a blessing to people and that we will have a chance to plant seeds of the gospel in people’s lives through our example and conversation.

In order to serve the community well, I’ve included a few important details for you below. Please be sure to read these before tomorrow, so that we can serve together more effectively.

Arrival time: Please arrive at 8:30am, so that we can give you your assignment and be ready to wash by 9:00am. If you have signed up, we are counting on you to be there on time (unless you let us know of a different arrival time in advance).
Location: Precision Detailing & Auto Shine. 1877 S Highway 14, Greer, SC 29650. For directions via Google Maps, click HERE.
Parking: we will need to park out back behind the location – please look for people with yellow parking vests on to direct you
Assignments: We will need a lot of different people doing various jobs. We will do our best to put you in an assignment that is well-suited to you, however, we will rotate through different assignments to give people a break. We will have one of the following roles ready for you to serve in:

Washer
Dryer
Rinser
Greeter
Drink/Snack Server
Sign-holder
Traffic help
Floater (to engage in conversation with guests)

Food: Please make sure you pack your own snacks and lunch - you will need the energy to stand out in the hot sun all morning and work! We will supply water and soft-drinks.
Finish Time: we are planning to be done by 1:00pm.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the event tomorrow. I know it will be a fun and memorable time!

Additional Hiking Info

Meeting place: Wal Mart parking lot on Woodruff Rd.
Meeting time: 8:00am
Return time: no later than 6:00pm
Destination: Sam’s Knob/Black Balsam, in the Pisgah National Forest (and possibly some smaller trails for folks who are up to it)

Details:

The drive is almost 2 hours to the hike. The hike from the parking lot to the field where we will eat lunch is about a 20 minute hike max. (easy)
(There will be restrooms about a 10 minute walk/hike from where we will be eating lunch)
The hike from the field to the top of Sam's Knob is about 45 minutes at a walking pace. (moderate)
Once we reach the top of the mountain there is plenty of room for people to have fun, enjoy the view and explore.
If there are some individuals that are unable to hike Sam's knob we may be able to split the group and have one group stay in the field or head to the creek.
From there, we will be hiking from the field down to a creek (about 20 minutes) to play around and cool off. This is of course after we come back down the mountain as there is only one trail up the mountain. (easy)
We should have no problem getting back at 1800.

Items needed for each individual:

Items indicated by an * are optional but we should have at least 1 for every 5 people

Hiking boots or shoes with strong ankle support (no crocs or open-toe shoes)
Day pack (school backpack is fine)
First-aid kit (can be in a ziploc bag: band-aids, antiseptic wipes or bottled) *
32 oz water bottle (can be 2 16 oz bottles if they want)
rain jacket (can just be a large black trash bag if you don't have one)

Snacks (optional) such as granola bars, raisins & peanuts, apple, etc.

Hiking Trip!

The Parent/Youth of our church will be taking a hiking trip on Saturday, July 17th and the Singles group will be helping out - to make it a

Parent/Youth & Singles hike. This hike will be in place of our normal CrossCurrent meeting. We will not be meeting on the 18th.

We will be leaving at 8:00am on Saturday, July 17th and heading up to the Brevard, North Carolina area. We are planning a full day of hiking, lunch

together and fun and we will return to Greenville around 6:00pm that evening.

We are really excited about getting together to just enjoy the great outdoors and each other's company and we'd love to have you there with us.

The hike will be a good chance not only to get together with other Parents and Youth of our church, it will also provide you with a chance to build

godly friendships with Singles in the church who are following the Lord just a few years ahead of you.

Please e-mail Jessica{at}sgcsc[dot]org if you can make it and also let us know if you'd be interested in helping with coordinating the hike itself too (our very own Eagle Scout, Josh Pratt will be helping lead the effort).

I'm looking forward to this hike - it will be lots of fun!

Upon arrival, please proceed to the tables in the rear of the building (near outside). Jessica will be sitting in that area. She will have your passes and will be assigning you to a team.

Once you receive your pass, please wait. Please do not begin playing. We are going to assemble into three teams and rotate through Go Carts, Mini-Golf, and Laser Tag. Matt will be giving you instruction once everyone arrives.

We will begin playing at 6:30pm. Jessica will be there early, ready to hand out your passes when you arrive. Feel free to arrive a couple minutes early.

Do you really know yourself? (Are you tempted to worldliness?)

This was the highly esteemed Greek principle inscribed at the front entrance way to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, which meant “Know Thyself”. The saying referred to the Greek value of understanding human behavior, morals and thought, because it was thought that ultimately to understand oneself is to understand other humans as well. Although there is some truth in the idea that knowing yourself is important, this idea has some serious limitations as well.

Knowing yourself is important if you are to understand what motivates you, what you desire and what you are living for. However, self-examination is not enough and in the end will prove futile if we do not examine ourselves in the light of God’s Word. We must seek to understand the desires and inclination of our sin nature that remain and then seek to apply the truth of Scripture our lives. We must know how our ambitions and desires stack up against what God says is true and discern how they compare to what the Bible says should motivate our lives.

Ultimately, our motivation should be to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord because of what He has done for us through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Or as the Apostle Paul said about living for the sake of Christ, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

So what about you? Do you know yourself?
If you answer the below questions honestly, (not how you know you should answer them but being honest about what you really think) they may help reveal what is motivating you:

What are your favorite things to do?
What do you like to spend time on?
What are your favorite things to watch?
What are your hobbies?
What do you like to spend money on?
Who are your favorite bands?
What are the last 5 songs or artists you downloaded on your iPod?
What are your favorite TV shows?
What are your favorite movies?
What are your favorite books?
What are your favorite shoes?
What are your favorite clothes?
What are your favorite games?
What are your favorite internet sites to go to?
What do you want to do in life?
What do you spend most of your free time doing?
Who do you want to notice you most?
Who do you most want to impress?

Your answers to the above questions could help reveal what you really love. The question is whether a motivation to live for God because of His great love for you is revealed? Or is a love for the world or the things of the world revealed?

1 John 2:15-17 says,
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions - is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

This scripture confronts us where we live and doesn’t leave us with any wiggle room. If we love the world or the things of the world, the love of the Father is not in us. This is radical. This requires that we know ourselves and that we live to love and please the Lord in what we do.

Obviously, because sin still remains in our hearts, our desires are never completely pure and our motives are most often mixed. The question is not whether we at times live for things other than God – the question is what the over-riding desire of our lives is normally. Do we seek to make each day an act of worship to God, even though we fail and need His grace continuously or are we just coasting along and living for the world and the things of the world without even realizing it? Or perhaps, even more seriously, are we living for the world and comfortable with it?

So, the question for us is, what do you love?
Over the next few posts, we are going to address the topic of worldliness. In the meanwhile, I would encourage you to pray and ask the Lord to reveal your heart to you. Where you experience conviction, I would encourage you to repent and trust in the grace of God to enable you to live a life that is pleasing to Him. We can never earn our salvation or keep our salvation by how we live, but how we live is a good indicator of whether we really love God.

A little self-evaluation will go a long way...

Ask yourself...
Here are some questions that I'd like you to ask yourself in evaluating where you are in your relationship with the Lord, to help you make your calling and election sure. They can help serve you as a good indicator of whether you appreciate the saving and cleansing grace of God in your life.

Ask your parents...
After you've thought through the questions and answered them honestly - I'd ask that you give your parents the same questions in advance and, after they've had time to consider where they think you are in regards to the questions, take some time to sit down with them and hear how they see you.

Hard but worth it...
I think that this will be a productive time and could really serve to spur you on to godliness and also encourage you in areas where God is evidently at work. It will take some hard work and serious humility on your part but the rewards will be lasting if you respond to God as you do it.

The Questions...
These questions are taken from page 54 of the book, Growing Up Christian, by Karl Graustein
1. Am I extremely grateful that God has saved me? (How do I see this in my life?)
2. Do I regularly think about what my life would be like if God had not saved me?
3. When I look at my life, do I see a lot of sin?
4. Am I often amazed that God forgives me, even when I repeatedly sin?
5. When I pray, do I frequently thank God for forgiving my sins?
6. Do I love to worship God and express my love for Him in song? (How is this demonstrated?)
7. Do I really enjoy talking with others about God? How many times in the past month have I actually done this and when is the last time I talked with someone about God that I initiated?
8. Do I look for opportunities to share my faith with others? When is the last time I shared my faith with someone else?
9. Am I extremely excited about spending eternity in heaven?
10. Do I regularly thank God for saving me from an eternity in hell?

In asking yourself these questions - please do not become discouraged if you're not doing well or proud if you do seem to be doing well in all these areas either. Let a less favorable evaluation lead to confession and repentance and be filled with fresh hope in the Grace of God to change you. On the other hand, let a favorable evaluation lead to encouragement and thanksgiving in God which leads to a greater desire to love and serve Him - and then be an example to others.

Are you sure?

Below is an outline from our last CrossCurrent meeting with the main points as well as the scriptures and quotes I referenced. I encourage each of you to read through the outline and take some time to meditate on the scriptures and then consider your own calling. Eternity is at stake and the Lord wants us to be sure of our salvation. If you aren't a Christian, please take this opportunity to repent, confess your sins and place all of your hope and confidence in Christ Jesus for salvation. If you are a Christian - please take the opportunity to make your calling sure and zealously pursue a close, personal relationship with Jesus.

2 Peter 1:10-12 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.

Why we do what we do matters to make sure our salvation is real

1. We need to be sure our salvation is real – because Eternity is at stake
Jesus said in Revelation 3:11; 14-16 “I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown…. 'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”

It is not my aim to introduce doubts and fears into your mind; no, but I do hope self-examination may help drive them away. It is not security but false security which we would kill; not confidence, but false confidence, which we would overthrow; not peace, but false peace, which we would destroy” – Charles H. Spurgeon

2. Knowledge alone is not enough – God wants knowledge from the heart
“Indeed the devil thinks more true thoughts about God in one day than a saint does in a lifetime, and God is not honored by it. The problem with the devil is not his theology, but his desires. Our chief end is to glorify God, the great Object. We do so most fully when we treasure him, desire him, delight in him so supremely that we let goods and kindred go and display his love to the poor and the lost.” – John Piper, When I Don’t Desire God

“Grace never ignores the awful truth of our depravity. In fact, it emphasizes it. The worse we realize we are, the greater we realize God’s grace is.” – Randy Alcorn

“A person who has no taste for the enjoyment of Christ will not go to heaven. “If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed” (1 Cor. 16:22). “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matt. 10:37). … Loving Jesus, not just “deciding” for him or “being committed to him” or affirming all the right doctrines about him, is the mark of a true child of God. 3. Actions alone are not enough – God wants actions from the heart

Nothing shows the direction of the deep winds of the soul like the demand for radical, sin-destroying, Christ-exalting joy in God.” – John Piper, When I Don’t Desire God

4. God wants your heart – because He wants to give you eternal life
“The fact that there is a struggle with sin, and a sense of grief because of sin is good. Unbeleivers have no such struggles or griefs. They may disappoint themselves for not living up to their own standards or to the standard of someone they respect. But they do not agonize over being unholy before God – a God who is holy and calls them to holiness. As A.W. Pink explained, “It is not the absence of sin but the grieving over it which distinguishes the child of God from empty professors [of faith]” – Donald Whitney

What do you think about in times of corporate worship?

Why do you acknowledge sin in your life?

Can You Really Be Sure?

How do I really know if I'm a Christian or not?

If you are a "church kid" and you are anything like me, you've asked yourself this question before. You may be unsure how to answer the question or even where to start in answering it. At times, you may have experienced an unsettled feeling and been uneasy about your eternal destiny deep inside but been afraid to confront those feelings or admit doubts, lest you find out that you really aren't a Christian.

You don't need to live this way. You really can know whether you are a Christian or not. And the good news is that even if you find out that you really aren't a Christian - you can admit it, confess it to your parents and friends and then turn to Jesus Christ in faith. From there, you can begin to truly trust in Jesus as your only hope for salvation, forgiveness and being right with God. Once you realize that "living right" on the outside doesn't impress God and doesn't make you a Christian, you can begin to place your faith in the only place that makes a difference- in the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus on our behalf and in our place.

No matter what, if you are unsure whether you are truly a Christian and you don't know how to answer the question, I would encourage you to do some hard work considering the question by yourself and then talk it over with your parents. To get you started, I'll be posting the "Self-Test" questions from the book, Growing Up Christian for the next 3 days. Please read through them carefully and answer them honestly - after all, eternity is at stake....

When you are by yourself...
Do you pray? What do you pray about?
Do you read the Bible? Do you enjoy reading your Bible? Do you experience God teaching you when you read your Bible?
Do you worship God? Why do you worship?
Do you think about God on your own? What aspects of God do you think about?
Do you confess your sin to God on your own? What sins do you confess to God - sins of motive and desire or primarily outward actions?

What Are You Living For?

It was great to get together with you all this past Sunday night.

Thanks to all of those who helped make the night a success by serving so faithfully in the areas of set-up/clean-up, snacks, games, sound, music & projection. Your servathood makes a real difference and it glorifies God!

Youth & Parents alike: Please don't forget to talk with each other about the message that you heard at our meeting Sunday night and discuss some of the ways that you can respond together.

Some things to consider as you respond to the message:

If you’re not sure of your salvation – talk about it with your parents and ask them what fruit they see in your life. Do you honor your parents? Right now, this is one of the most important fruits you can demonstrate – along with a personal passion for God.
Do you love God and do you truly want to know Him? If so, it might be a sign that you’re born again –talk it over with your parents and get their thoughts.
I'd encourage everyone to sit down and talk with your parents about what the importance of things like sports, entertainment, friends or games have in your life. Consider whether you are spending time on these things to the detriment of your relationship with God. You may need to repent, forget what lies behind and strain forward to what the Lord has ahead for you.
Ask yourself if you live by the gospel of Jesus Christ each day? If not, you can start to know the joy of the gospel by preaching the gospel to yourself each day. If you don't know what this looks like, ask.
Make sure that you make your calling and election sure – but then don’t walk it out in isolation
Involve your parents – ask for their help, ask for them to point out areas in need of growth, ask them to help you evaluate what is important to you. Ask them to point out areas where they see God at work in your life. Ask them to help you apply the gospel to your life.

Hey folks - I hope that you're having a great summer so far (I know that the summer seems to be flying by for our family). I am looking forward to being a part of the group as we start the CrossCurrent meetings up again in September.

In the meanwhile, please check out the below video of highlights from the baptism service that we held in church a couple of weeks ago. What a privilege it was to participate together in celebrating 16 people publicly declaring their faith and new life in Christ! As you watch, I'd encourage you to think about what kind of public declaration your life is making for Christ and consider how you can "show Him" more in everything you do.
